John is early in his program but he has settled on heterogeneous catalysis as his research area. When he joined the department he met the faculty in sessions set up by the department to discuss faculty research and then he had individual meetings to discuss three different areas before choosing his field. John will shape his coursework around his research field, taking some courses outside the department, such as fuel cell technology in the mechanical engineering department.
